On Monday, Transport Minister Julie Boulet announced that drivers in Quebec may soon face a 24-hour license suspension if they drive with .05 percent blood-alcohol level or higher in their systems. This is one of the 27 recommendations Boulet suggested in a security report released on Monday to keep the roads safer. This new rule is to be introduced in the National Assembly this week. "Once the public realizes that it is dangerous to drive with 50 milligrams, they will change their behavior. They're not stupid, and if they have the correct information, they will adapt their behavior to a better way of doing things," said Jean-Marie de Koninck from the Quebec road safety task force. If a driver is found to have higher than a 0.05 per cent blood-alcohol level, police could seize the vehicle for 24 hours.
Drunk driving is a huge issue. It is the most selfish thing a person can do. They get behind the wheel drunk. Their coordination and their thinking is compromised. They are driving one way with other cars coming towards them either in the other direction or alongside. They are like ticking time bombs. I think the government should be even stricter when it comes to punishment of this action. There should be zero tolerance.

I agree that Drunk Driving is a serious problem, however I do not think blood alchohol level should be the absolute law. This is because some people have a natural resilliance to the effects of the alcholol and depending on the level of your intoxication the penalty should be more severe. In most Provinces it is ok to have one drink then go drive. I believe that people should be made aware of their ability to intake alchohol and beable to act accordingly. On the other hand you will never be pulled over for drunk driving if you do not drive irradically. A reason for this is an experience of a family friend of mine. He blew a tire the street over from his house so he decided to drive it home on three tires and fix it at home. The car shook and a passerby called him in for drunk driving. The driver got home and fixed the tire went inside and had a drink. The police arrived and he was arrested because he had alchohol in his system.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Austin Almadi and Matthew Whitelaw in this situation. I however, do believe that alcohol level should be the absolute law because it's the most accurate way to tell if the person is drunk or not. Although some people may have a "natural resilience", it doesn't object the fact that the more you have to drink, the worse your motor skills become, and I don't think that just merely becasue someone is "naturally resilient" is a valid reason to allow those with an alcohol level above the law to drive. That's my view point on the drunk driving in Quebec.
